We all want to live long, happy,
meaningful, healthy lives. Genes may indeed have a
role in the likelihood of living a long life, but
we all know it's the everyday lifestyle choices
that will ultimately determine the quality and
length of our lives. Most of us are pretty savvy
and know the standard American diet just can't
support the kind of health and vibrancy we are
looking for. So we have changed our diets to
include more fresh, organic produce, eliminating
saturated animal fats, sugar, chemicals, etc.
However, even if we are eating the best diet in the
world, we could still be robbing our body of
desperately needed nutrients.
It starts with our soils. Our food is only as
nutrient rich as our soils, which have been over
farmed and depleted over the past 50 years by huge
corporate farming techniques. Our foods are a mere
shadow of the spinach of Popeye's day. Some studies
say many of the nutrients are missing. Modern
tomatoes prove the taste is absolutely missing.
Food has sadly become entertainment with very
little real taste or nourishment. Processed,
denatured, chemically grown, hybridized,
genetically altered, irradiated, less than just
picked fresh food will have the same careless,
unnatural effects on our cells. Immune systems
become compromised as well as attitudes and
outlooks. Our systems only run as good as the fuel
we put in them. Degenerative disease is on the
rise. We don't catch degenerative disease; we earn
it with each bite we take.
Pick up any magazine and you will find a
plethora of diets, fads, does and don'ts. Yoga
advocates a vegetarian diet. Over the past 30
years, this is what I have found that works best
for me, RAW AND VEGAN
Cut
out meat. It's loaded with chemicals,
antibiotics, growth hormones and all sorts of
junk. The meat itself is hard to and long to
digest, (who chews their food 40 times?) staying
in your bowels for many, many hours, putrefying
and causing havoc. It's expensive, risky (rots)
and is hard on the environment to produce. You
won't miss it and you'll live much longer. Om
Cut
out dairy. Unless you are buying organic,
dairy is filled with the same garbage as meat.
It's hard to digest, gunks up the system and is
really fattening. I know, cheese tastes good, but
it's time to give it up!
GO
RAW. Raw food is alive. You will digest
your food easier, get more energy from it and
will feel light and bright. Humans are the only
creatures on the planet to cook their food... get
back to the way nature intended and leave the
stove behind.
Eat
low on the food chain. Eat simple and
bright. Chemicals and toxins "bio-accumulate" in
plants and animals. The higher up the food chain
you go, the more toxic it becomes. Tuna fish has
all the toxins found in the other fish it eats
and the toxins from fish and plants those bate
fish eat..and on and on.
Ingest

The most widely used Ayurvedic herbal
formulation is Triphala. Literally meaning
"three fruits", Triphala is composed of the
dried fruits of Amalaki, Bibhitaki and Haritaki. Containing five of the
six tastes, triphala removes excess vata, pitta and kapha from the body, bringing
balance and proper functioning to the system. The
uses of this magical blend are so broad and
effective that it is considered to be a general
panacea for all kinds of disease. In fact, Dr.
Vasant Lad, the founder of the Ayurvedic Institute
in Albuquerque, and many other Ayurvedic physicians
consider the formula to be so beneficial that they
give triphala to nearly every patient.
One reason triphala is so popular is because of
its special ability to gently cleanse and detoxify
the system while replenishing and nourishing it at
the same time. Triphala is a highly effective
laxative that can be used for both chronic and
acute constipation. It works as a gentle purgative

is essentially powdered fruits, there is little
danger of using it in excess. As a laxative, a
common dosage is a teaspoon of triphala mixed as a
tea in hot water. However, to achieve the desired
result, more or less can be used depending on the
individual. Because drinking triphala tea is not a
pleasant experience for most people (it is said
that triphala takes on the tastes that the body
needs most, which for most westerners is bitter,
sour and astringent), triphala in tablet form is
available. Again the doses can vary widely. Larger
doses as a laxative, smaller doses for blood
cleansing and rejuvenation
There is a traditional Ayurvedic saying, "When
in doubt, give triphala", further testifying to its
broad list of uses. Millions of people over the
past centuries have effectively used triphala as a
part of their daily health regime, and many more
continue to enjoy its benefits today.

We all know about pH, perhaps you have or
had a swimming pool and needed to test the ph of
the water with one of those strips that change
color. Maybe you are familiar with skin or hair
products that are the "right" ph for healthy,
shiny, clear hair or skin.
pH stands for potential hydrogen, which means
how much negative ions (alkaline-forming) and
positive ions (acid-forming) push against one
another. The pH scale is measured in numbers, 14
(very alkaline) to 0 (very acid).
Newspaper has an acid ph and will eventually dry
up and deteriorate. Acid-free paper used in museums
will last several hundred years without significant
deterioration.
An alkaline forming reaction in the body
increases it's ability to be energized. Whereas an
acid forming reaction decrease it's ability to be
energized. A pH of 6.4 is best for body
function.
Food has alkaline or acid responses in our
bodies. What we eat will determine our pH. healthy
and strong or depilating and deteriorating. The
standard American diet (S.A.D.) is acid forming.
Meat (1.5), wheat (1.5), sugar (1.0), diary (3.5),
coffee (1.5), coke (1.0) and alcohol (1.5) will
yield acid residue in our cells and will eventually
reek havoc in the system causing a multitude of
symptoms we call "disease".

For the most part, all fresh fruit
and vegetables are alkaline. Lemons are extremely
alkaline (7.5). just the opposite of what you might
think. Melons are also high on the list (7.0). A
great way to start each day is the juice of a lemon
in some warm (not hot) water. This sets the system
up for an alkaline day. Coffee with cream and sugar
(1.5), a bagel with cream cheese (1.5) and (gasp)
even worse, bacon and eggs, is fodder for the fire.
Instead you might choose melons, fresh fruit and a
few raw almonds (5.0). Algae is powerfully alkaline
as are all chlorophyll products and should be taken
daily.
Of course, always choose organic
produce. Chemical residues are acid forming and
will nestle down deep in the cells and fatty
tissues. avoid them. This also includes shampoos,
soap, makeup, hair dyes etc. which can be absorbed
thru the skin and cause acid conditions. Use
organic, chemical free products.
Let's face it; we live in a
stressful world. Stress is acid forming and usually
creates a desire for acid producing foods and
substances. Fire breeds fire. Daily Yoga is a
wonderful balance for stressful living. Of course,
changing your line of work to a less stressful
occupation can add years of health and happiness to
your life.

strongly. Support yours with intelligent dietary
and lifestyle changes. This is sometimes easier
